We often hear โpatience is a virtue.โ But what does the Bible actually say about patience, and how do we practice it faithfully in our everyday lives?
Galatians 5:22-23 (NIV) tells us โBut the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.โ
Among the fruit of the Spirit, patience is a quality we are called to embody as believers. Not only does patience help us love others well โ strengthening us to be kind and gracious to others during frustrating or difficult situations โ but it teaches us to rely on God for direction and guidance in our lives and relationships.
However, patience isnโt easy. Whether youโre waiting for the Lord to reveal next steps in your life or steadfastly praying for a family member or friend to come to Christ for years โ trusting the Lord to work in His perfect timing can feel like tediously stepping into the unknown.
As you live out the practice of patience, here are a few tips to encourage you in your journey with the Lord.
1. The Practice of Patience Allows You to Walk with God in the Waiting
โBe joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayerโ Romans 12:12 (NIV).
In seasons of active waiting, whether for something to happen in your life or anotherโs, the Lord invites us to lean on Him through patience. In seasons of joy or trial, we can grow closer to God through prayerfully surrendering to Him with open hands and trusting Him with His timeline above our own.
2. The Practice of Patience Teaches Us How to Embrace Discomfort
โWe also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hopeโ Romans 5:3-4 (NIV).
If youโre practicing patience, thereโs a high chance youโre not comfortable. Patience requires us to hold our tongue when weโd like to speak, stand still with a decision when weโd like to run, and lean into the unknown when weโd like answers. However, through the discomfort of patience, God works in our lives to grow faith, produce character, and show us what true trust in Him looks like.
3. The Practice of Patience is an Opportunity to Offer Grace to Others
โLove is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proudโ 1 Corinthians 13:4 (NIV).
It can often feel like we are playing the long game with the people we are praying for, hoping that one day, God will work in our loved onesโ lives. Patience gives us the opportunity to love others well in the waiting, showing grace and offering second chance after second chance to those who donโt know God personally yet. These moments allow us to extend the same grace and patience to others that God extends to us daily.
As you continue in your journey with God and others, consider this question: how is the Lord working and growing you through the practice of patience in your life?

I thank God for being still in the storm of life because he is near
Thank you! I am in great need of patience right now and find this resource very helpful. I appreciate the comments too!
ALL OF YOUR STUDY RESOURSES ARE GREAT. I APPRECIATE EACH MESSAGE. THANK YOU!!!
yes I am with patience because I was told that Satan wants you to make quick decisions so you have no time to think and then you make mistakes. Satan wants you to jump right on it. If you have patience you can pray, think and receive GODโs answer to your decision and then you are making the right decision. So I always say I gotta pray first and then I will give an answer. I always wait on God first which is patience depending how long to wait for the Godโs answer.
I think youโre right that in making a big decision I need to pray about it. But in my life anxiety comes with my impatience. I hope that people like me who is in a major life change turning 52, can help but wonder how to wait for something that Iโm constantly thinking about buying, etc. Prayers to thwart the enemies mischief.
